Hands Up; Don’t Shoot

Photographs, links and discussions surrounding the separate cases concerning the deaths of two American black men have been flooding my Facebook account for weeks. These deaths were the result of unfortunate encounters with law enforcement. What has sparked the ire of so many American citizens isn’t only that these deaths happened, but is also stems from the fact that the separate cases against the officers involved were heard and then dismissed by a grand jury.

Police officers risk their lives daily when they go out to do their job, and it’s understandable that they put certain steps in place in order to stay safe. But the reality is that racial profiling clearly leads to unnecessary bias and can make a situation become more dangerous than it should have been in the first place. Surely there must be a better way.

This is why people are protesting and demanding that there be a positive change in their system. As the media highlights all the events as they unfold, and as I watch it all from the outside looking in, it’s absolutely clear that the people have a point. We all want to feel safe.

Below is just a sample of what I’ve been seeing in the media over the past few weeks, and the picture they paint is evident.
